Germany rises to the occasion

I have not always been happy with Germany's recent positions on world affairs but this gesture does much to soften my opinion:

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Friday said he supported a U.S. request for the release of international oil reserves in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Schroeder said Germany's had a "historic duty" to support the United States because of U.S. aid to post-World War II Germany.

Kudos, Chancellor Schroeder. And thank you for making it a point to recognize our nation's past generosity in your time of need. Your help is much appreciated.
