US, 3 nations discuss shift of Guantanamo inmates

The Boston Globe reports that the US is conducting talks to transfer about 70 % of GITMO detainees to three different countries "to share the burden of keeping suspected terrorists behind bars". They have already reached an agreement with Afghanistan on Thursday to send 20% of the prisoners to Kabul. Matthew Waxman who is Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs (try to put that on a business card) says:
''the arrangement we have reached with the government of Afghanistan is the latest step in what has long been our policy -- that we need to keep dangerous enemy combatants off the battlefield.

Agreed. I just hope that the facilities at Afghanistan are as secure as we have at GITMO. Otherwise all it takes are a couple of Taliban operatives in guard uniforms to make a big mess of things.
