Iraqi news agency launches

This Guardian headline excited me. A new independent news agency in Iraq! Finally, the Iraqi people will have a voice and we won't have to rely on the cynical reports coming out of the MSM. Finally we will get a more accurate picture of some of the constructive things that are happening in this fledgling new nation.

Then I read the first sentence:

Iraq is to get its first independent news agency run and staffed by Iraqi journalists and backed by Reuters and the United Nations.

And my hopes were dashed. With the backing of Reuters and the UN what we are essentially getting is Al Jazeera's snobby little cousin. Oh well, Iraq ostensibly is a free nation now. Maybe Fox can stake out some territory over there.
